Living donation

On this page, you will find an overview of the most important protocols. Read more about the crossover program and see what information, reimbursements, and training are available from the NTS.

Protocols and guidelines

Below you will find a brief explanation of the most important protocols.

British guideline Living Donor Kidney Transplantation

In the Netherlands, we follow the British guidelines for living kidney donation, as they largely correspond to the Dutch situation. On the NTV website, you will find a summary of recommendations in the British guideline 'Living Donor Kidney Transplantation'.

NierTeam Aan Huis protocol

NierTeam Aan Huis (NTAH) is a supplementary information program. It provides patients and their loved ones with information at home about kidney failure, transplantation, and the possibility of living kidney donation. This allows patients, together with people in their environment, to better weigh their options and can help start a conversation about donation.

Guideline for altruistic donation

In directed altruistic donation, there is no prior relationship between the donor and the recipient. Contact is only established after the need for a donor organ has been made public, for example via social media, (local) media, or special websites.

The LONT has drawn up a guideline for directed altruistic donation. This contains agreements, procedures, and template letters.

Guideline for aftercare for living donation

There is a separate guideline for aftercare following living donation.

Cross-over program

Sometimes a kidney donor cannot donate directly to a recipient.Cross-over kidney transplantationcan still make donation possible. The cross-over program matches pairs of donors and recipients.

The NTS carries out this program together with the kidney transplant centers, the National Reference Laboratory Leiden, the National Kidney Transplantation Consultation (LONT), and the Cross-over working group.

National Crossover Protocol

Project crossover+

In the Cross-over+ project, the cross-over program is being further developed to give patients who are difficult to transplant a better chance of finding a suitable donor.

Living Donation Subsidy Scheme

Medical costs directly related to the donation are fully reimbursed. There is no excess (deductible). Other costs can also be reimbursed as a donor. This is done through the Living Donation Subsidy Scheme, which is administered by the NTS. Possible reimbursements include travel expenses, domestic help, or income lost due to the donation.
