Implementing Image Sharing Project

The Implementing Image Sharing project makes it possible to share anonymized images from donor hospitals. The project was completed in November 2025.

Since 2023, a CT scan of the thorax and abdomen has been standard practice for deceased organ donors. These images are of great added value for assessing donor suitability and evaluating organ offers.

The Implementing Image Sharing project makes it possible to share (provide access to) CT scans and any X-ray images from the donor hospital in an anonymized manner with a transplant center and the independent retrieval teams (ZUT). From November 2025, the application can be used to share the images.

What is the goal?

After implementation of this project, legal and quality requirements regarding image sharing will be met. We are also simplifying the workflow by providing all involved parties with the same images via a single route.

Collaboration

This change has been coordinated with, among others, the organ advisory committees of the Dutch Transplantation Society and the donation committee of the NVIC.

The images are shared via the Twiin portal.

Better preparation for transplants thanks to CT scans

'My life as a transplant surgeon is getting better now that I can view CT scans of the donor in advance,' says Mijntje Nijboer, retrieval and transplant surgeon.

What are all the benefits and what did the project involve? Mijntje Nijboer, ODC Wim de Jongh, and project leader Ramona Broekhuizen talk about this in this article.
